In the yard of a house, student Natalia Savina has been strangled. There are no signs of rape, and it doesn't appear to be a robbery, as all valuable items are in place. The attention of police colonels Gurov and Kryachko is drawn to Savina's neighbor - Terentyev. He bluntly states that he killed Natalia, freeing her from life's problems she often complained about. At the same time, the suspect reveals that several years ago he 'helped' another girl in the same way.
