This novel brought Lawrence the greatest success and the most bitter disappointment. Once it was considered hardly anything less than a model of "filthy pornography," but subsequently it was recognized as a classic of English prose. The story of Lady Chatterley, torn between a platonic attachment to her disabled husband and a very earthly, sensual passion for a handsome gamekeeper, no longer seems either scandalous or sensational. It repeatedly delights the reader with its depth of understanding of human psychology, especially the psychology of love.
