This volume includes the first three novels of the cycle, telling about the young and mature years of Natty's life, his friendship with the Delaware Indian Chingachgook, their skirmishes with the Hurons in the forest depths and on the lake surface, the deadly risks that the friends take to rescue Chingachgook's beloved from captivity, to protect the Hutter family (‘The Deer Slayer’) and to save the daughters of British Colonel Munro (‘The Last of the Mohicans’), about the main character's love for the daughter of his long-time friend, Sergeant Thomas Dunham, and his self-sacrifice for the sake of another's happiness (‘The Pathfinder’). The complete text of ‘The Deer Slayer’ is published, all authorial prefaces and notes to the novels and their later lifetime editions are restored. The book reproduces full sets of illustrations for Cooper's novels created by English artists, the brothers Henry Matthew Brock and Charles Edmund Brock.
