Polina, returning to her hotel room after meeting her longtime friend Yulia, finds her husband dead. By a happy coincidence, the brutal murder is being investigated by Yulia's husband, Major Kazarinov. And the first conclusion he comes to: the murderer is a woman. But who is she? The maid who quit the day before, or the victim's mistress, with whom he, as it turned out, was regularly meeting at this hotel. At first glance, neither has a motive. But soon Polina learns that her husband owned a very valuable painting by a seventeenth-century Dutch painter. And its whereabouts are now unknown to anyone...
