Doctor Vasily Ottovich Falk — an aesthete, pedant, and skeptic, had never been interested in solving murders and hoped for a quiet vacation in his beloved "Green Meadow," where he comes every year from Petersburg during the summer.
However, almost immediately after his arrival in the country community on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, the doctor is summoned to the home of an elderly widow: she was found dead in the morning… Shortly before her death, she had complained to Falk that a gray monk had been appearing in her garden at night — a sure harbinger of death.
The doctor does not believe in gloomy omens and realizes that a murder has occurred in the community. And the further Vasily Ottovich tries to distance himself from the investigation, the more he becomes involved in the search for the criminal, as it quickly becomes clear that almost every resident of the country community had reasons to wish harm upon the deceased.
