Samuel Pepys was a contemporary of events such... as the execution of Charles I and the Restoration of the monarchy, the Great Fire of London and the plague epidemic, and he wrote vividly and passionately about all these events. With equal ease, Pepys recounted wars with the Netherlands and theatrical premieres, service in the Admiralty, and revelries with friends, quarrels with his wife, and courtships of a maid.
His diary entries formed a cycle of eleven volumes, and this edition includes a selection of excerpts that will help readers gain a complete understanding of the everyday life, customs, and mores of various layers of English society in the 17th century.
