Refuge

Kate Orm is young, naive, and does not realize how cruel people can be. Her fiancé, Denis Peyton, a simple and straightforward man, has perceived life as an extremely pleasant endeavor since birth. Kate, in essence, knows almost nothing about... him until one day she discovers that Denis can act dishonestly and treacherously—and, most importantly, doesn’t even understand where he is wrong. After all, the high society of America’s "Gilded Age" lives with omissions and compromises—who is to blame when sometimes these are compromises with one's own conscience? Kate is confused: should she cancel the engagement? What if, in doing so, she only makes things worse: saves herself but betrays the yet unborn son, whose image is already so vivid in her mind? And will her son, when he grows up, justify his mother's sacrifice—or will he follow in his father's footsteps?
