Nikolai Gavrilovich Chernyshevsky (1828 — 1889) is a Russian literary critic, publicist, writer, revolutionary democrat, and philosopher.
In the novel "What to do?" Chernyshevsky challenges outdated social norms and proposes a bold plan to save Russia. The author describes "new people" – revolutionary democrats striving to build a just society based on reason, labor, and love. Chernyshevsky's socialist ideals are embodied in the story of Vera Pavlovna and her surroundings. Their life is an experiment in creating an ideal world where labor brings joy and relationships are based on equality.
