In the life of young operative Gosha, everything is a complete mess. He dreams of leaving the service, but it is not easy to do so—his boss is a very vindictive man and is unlikely to let him go. Gosha seems to be floating with the current, accepting the hopelessness of the situation.
Meanwhile, the media is abuzz with the news: the late people's artist, a man of the era of Grigory Karmashik, has a secret illegitimate son. His legal wife and daughter Lily are outraged and are preparing to issue a denial. To punish the offender, they enlist the police.
Thus, Gosha ends up in Karmashik's house, the idol of his childhood, and falls in love with Lily. She asks him to visit his father's hometown of Kalinovsk, where the mother of the self-proclaimed son supposedly lived. He must find out who these people really are and what goals they are pursuing.
