A talented young artist, Krey, lost among the hills in a strong snowstorm, stumbles upon a solitary house that becomes a miraculous refuge for him. The traveler is warmly welcomed by the owner of the house, the famous collector Jimmy Parsley, and his ward, the young Madrasia. But after a few days, a rather complicated story begins to unfold, related to an ancient box stored in the house.

J. S. Fletcher, a contemporary of Conan Doyle, a representative of the "Golden Age of English Detective Fiction," was one of the most prolific English authors of the detective genre, his works rivaled the novels of Edgar Wallace.
