Eugene Onegin

The novel in verse "Eugene Onegin" is the most famous and significant work of A.S. Pushkin, the pinnacle of his poetic creativity. The appearance of this novel is the central event in Russian culture of the 19th century. After the... publication of just the first chapter of "Eugene Onegin", V.A. Zhukovsky, whom Pushkin considered his teacher, exclaimed: "You are the first on the Russian Parnassus..."

"The Encyclopedia of Russian Life", "the first true realistic Russian novel", "the most heartfelt work of Pushkin" — this masterpiece, full of unresolved mysteries and paradoxes, has been attributed countless characteristics.

Written in a unique stanza, with a combination of depth and lightness, irony and tragedy, epic and lyricism that only Pushkin could master, "Eugene Onegin" seems to have exhausted all possibilities of the verse novel genre — nothing similar has appeared in either Russian or world literature since.
