In the Land of Forests

An educated middle-class girl must marry a man from her own circle, believes Grace Melbury's father. Indifferent to his daughter's feelings, he forces her to break off her relationship with the ignorant but honest and kind woodsman Giles Winterbourne and literally pushes her to the altar with Dr. Edred Fitzpiers. However, married life turns into hell for both spouses: the incorrigible womanizer Fitzpiers embarks on affair after affair, while Grace, not inclined to meek patience, demolishes him with sharp remarks and sarcasm.
