The stories of A. P. Chekhov, distinguished by their subtle irony, dynamism, and brevity, are full of love, memories, and emotional pain. By placing... characters in the mundane, in familiar life situations, the writer placed greater emphasis on revealing the internal conflicts of man. Through emotions, facial expressions, and gestures, he characterized ambiguous characters, not openly discussing the psychology of their souls, but allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions. It is for this reason that D. P. Svyatopolsky-Mirsky found in him «a complete freedom from preaching and moralizing», while G. Adamovich noted his unparalleled «ability to express everything in one word and, in particular, to show», while the heart breaks with «compassion, horror, sadness, pity, love».
