Summer of 1879. The famous Nizhny Novgorod Fair attracts not only merchants and industrialists from all over the Russian Empire, but also criminals of all kinds – the richest fair acts like a magnet for swindlers, thieves, and murderers... Already a day before its opening, the first corpse is discovered. A page from the precious manuscript of the protopope Avvakum is found in the heel of an unknown person, hunted by both the schismatics and the robbers from the gang of Osy Dusheguba. The best forces of the police are sent to search for the criminals, but the case turns out to be incredibly complicated, and it remains unsolved, while the brutal murders continue...
