New Year's Eve, 1990. A U.S. Army general dies of a heart attack. There seems to be nothing unusual about this, however, the circumstances of his death raise many questions. The high-ranking official is found naked in a shabby motel... room, and the duty officer of the military police, Jack Reacher, has to respond to the call. He discovers that a briefcase belonging to the general, which presumably contained top-secret papers, has been stolen, and soon finds the body of the general's widow, murdered in her own home that same night. The 'clean-up' continues: two special forces soldiers are eliminated one by one. There are shake-ups in the high command. And someone inside the massive bastion that is the American army really wants to frame Jack Reacher—previously an untouchable investigator of the special department—to make him a scapegoat for those who are accustomed to killing...
