One of the greatest American romantics of the 19th century, Edgar Allan Poe is a mysterious figure. The writer's life is shrouded in mystery and a sinister atmosphere, just like his works. Edgar Poe looked into the abyss all his life, and the abyss looked into him, and from this were born stories: dark, strange, whimsical. In them he touched on themes of death, suffering, the duality of the soul, the disintegration of personality, the innate depravity of man, his inexplicable cruelty, and supernatural abilities. Edgar Poe was the first to conceive of making a detective the main character, his main weapon being analytical skills, and the basis of the plot an investigation of murder. It is he who is credited with the creation of the famous Sherlock Holmes.
The book reproduces the illustrations of Harry Clarke, which are somewhere on the edge of whimsy and horror, very in tune with the spirit of the published stories. If the author himself had taken on the task of illustrating his own stories, he would surely have done so in a similar style.
