After finishing school in a rundown town in Kentucky, Marietta Greer buys an ancient battered "Volkswagen" and sets out on a journey across America in search of a better life. She doesn't expect miracles, but she knows for sure that there is nothing for someone like her in her hometown. Gloom, hopelessness, monotony – that's all Pittman County can offer you. Yes, Lord, in the 70s they didn't even know what a rotary phone was! If you wanted to call someone, you had to pick up the receiver and tell the operator: "Girl, connect me to..."
