The characterless dreamer Manilov, the unlettered accumulator Korobochka, the empty boaster Nozdryov, the coarse and straightforward Sobakevich, the pathological miser Plyushkin... Each of them embodies an exaggerated image, assembled from vices and weaknesses. And how vividly they manifest when the visiting guest Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov decides to buy the dead souls of serfs from them!
