Amelia Peabody, the heiress of a large fortune and a true old maid (thirty years for a Victorian lady is a solid age), yearns for adventure and travel — and the more dangerous, the better. Not wasting time on hesitation, she sets off on a trip to Egypt.
Along the way, Amelia gains a friend, and together they dive headfirst into a world of dangers. Life in an ancient tomb, hunting a reanimated mummy, searching for ancient treasures, and witty repartees with a pesky archaeologist who thoroughly despises women bring Amelia immense pleasure.
