The collection of the famous English writer Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) includes the novellas "The Lost World" and "The Poison Belt" translated by Zinaida Nikolaevna Zhuravskaya, the novella "The Mystery of the Misty Country" translated by Dmitry Mochnev, as well... as two short stories: "When the World Screamed" and "The Disintegrator of Nemor." The book is adorned with illustrations by four artists — two Americans: Joseph Coll (1881–1921) and Herbert Stups (1887–1948) and two Britons: Harry Rountree (1878-1950) and Francis Hayley (1878-1965); all of them illustrated the first magazine publications of Doyle.The image of the perceptive detective Sherlock Holmes glorified his creator — the English writer Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930). However, his literary legacy is much broader than the "Holmesiana," which began in 1886 with the novella "A Study in Scarlet." Doyle wrote historical novels, novellas, and short stories. He inherited his interest in writing from his mother: the stories she told him in childhood were vividly imprinted in the memory of the future writer. At Stonyhurst Jesuit College, where young Arthur studied, a group of enthusiastic listeners would invariably gather around him — his friend easily improvised, composing another intriguing story on the spot. Doyle's exuberant imagination would later help him create an entire series of captivating works. In 1881, he graduated from the medical faculty of Edinburgh University and opened a private practice in Portsmouth. However, the young doctor had few patients: passing the time and trying to improve his financial situation, Doyle decided to seriously engage in literature. And he did not regret it!
Holmes was not the only memorable character to emerge from Arthur Doyle's pen. Officer Gerard and Sir Nigel became classics of historical-adventure literature, while the name of Professor Challenger is well known among science fiction enthusiasts. Energetic and tireless, Challenger is a man of science; he believes that nothing is impossible for a true researcher, and his achievements astonish his contemporaries. Challenger has a difficult personality, but his friends and fans of his scientific talent sympathize with him. The cycle of works about the eccentric professor is included in this edition.
