In a short time, several people die in Pskov Region at the hands of an unknown criminal. Among them are the second secretary of the city party committee and the local police officer. The investigation of this high-profile case is entrusted to Major of Militia Pavel Zverev and his assistant Veniamin Kostin. The detectives discover that the deceased were frontline comrades and occasionally met in peacetime to hunt together. Who could the veterans have offended? Or is it sabotage against party workers? Zverev works through one version after another until he encounters a new, carefully disguised horrific crime...
