Rowena Westhope, a twenty-four-year-old widow, returning home after her husband's death in the war, led a quiet, dull life, as one should in her position. While rescuing her restless younger sister from another predicament, the woman meets James Winterley -... a representative of an aristocratic lineage. The first off-putting impression that the man makes on her, despite his beauty and evident virtues, is replaced upon closer acquaintance first by interest, and then by infatuation. This occurs after Rowena, breaking decency, eavesdrops on his candid conversation with his brother outside the window. She realizes that James is not at all the person he seems to be.
