The book includes two works by the English writer and recognized classic of adventure literature Thomas Mayne Reid – the famous novel «The Headless Horseman» (1865–1866), which glorified its creator, and the novella «Sea Wolf Cub» (1859). Filled with impressions... and moods from the young years that the author spent in the USA, the romantic story of the noble Texas mustanger Maurice Gerald and the beautiful daughter of the planter Louise Poindexter, whose love is opposed by the intrigues of an envious rival and the ominous secret of the headless horseman who terrifies the inhabitants of the savannah, still captivates the imagination of readers both in Mayne Reid's homeland and around the world. The hero of «Sea Wolf Cub», twelve-year-old Philip Forster, is drawn to wanderings and adventures, leading him on board the trading ship «Inca», sailing from England to Peru, where he secretly sneaks away from the crew. Hiding in the hold, buried alive among bales of cargo, boxes, and barrels, young Philip is forced to fight for survival – overcoming thirst, hunger, loneliness, fear of the dark, seasickness, and battling ship rats. He has to use all his knowledge, skills, and ingenuity to carve his way up, to freedom.
