Winter of 1934. The expedition of Otto Schmidt is preparing to traverse the Northern Sea Route from Murmansk to Vladivostok in a single summer navigation. However, the project, conceived as another victory of Soviet scientific thought, faces unforeseen difficulties from... the very beginning. The steamship «Chelyuskin» was not ready for the harsh conditions of the Arctic Ocean. After being trapped in snow, it drifted for several months before being crushed by the ice and sinking.
The crew managed to unload onto the ice. But what to do next – to struggle towards the shore on their own or wait for help from the mainland? The Chelyuskin team realizes that they can only rely on themselves. In the harsh Arctic conditions, they engage in an unequal struggle against the merciless elements…
