Zinaida Nikolaevna Gippius 1869–1945, the extravagant beauty of the Silver Age, is most often remembered together with her famous husband – Dmitry Merezhkovsky. In many ways, they indeed seemed inseparable. The spouses complemented, inspired, and provoked each other in life... and creativity. However, it would be a great mistake to perceive Gippius merely as a muse in this union. In the literary circles of Russia in the early 20th century, Zinaida Nikolaevna played a significant and independent role: she actively published prose, journalism, and appeared as a critic. She wrote poetry, by her own admission, "only when she could not help but write," so they can be regarded as a sort of poetic diary, capturing the thoughts and feelings of a highly experienced, extraordinary, vibrant woman, a gifted poetess...
