The lives of young lovers Florence and Rupert collapse when the war begins. Rupert goes missing, and Florence is left alone with a child. A year later, the girl finds a poem in a book, starting with the words «Wait for me, and I will return».

The day before the wedding, twenty-five-year-old Max has a nightmare that haunted him in childhood: he finds himself in the midst of a battle during World War II. Time and again, he wakes up with a wildly racing heart. In an attempt to make sense of the terrible dream, Max embarks on a journey that leads him to Cornwall, to a man named Rupert Dash.
