The Girl with Braids

1941, the Netherlands under German occupation. Freddie Oversteegen is almost sixteen, but with two thin braids tied with ribbons, she looks like a real girl. This means she can distribute illegal newspapers and flyers, post propaganda posters without arousing suspicion.... Being useful for her country and contributing to the fight against the Germans — that is what Freddie and her older sister Truus want. But what if they took a greater risk: join the Resistance group and help eliminate fascists? Is it possible to retain one’s identity in war, or does violence change a person forever?
The novel by Wilma Geldof "The Girl with Braids" is based on the true story of the youngest member of the Dutch Resistance, Freddie Dekker-Oversteegen, and has been translated into seven languages. In 2019, the book was shortlisted for the Teo Beckman Award and included in the "White Ravens" selection of the International Munich Library.
