Wives and Daughters

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) is one of the most famous "literary ladies" of Victorian England, the author of the novels "Cranford", "North and South", "Wives and Daughters". The latter remained unfinished due to Gaskell's sudden death;
the concluding part of the novel... was completed by journalist and writer F. Greenwood, based on information received from the writer herself about the development of the plot and resolution. In nature, the novel is close to the works of Charlotte Brontë, with whom Gaskell was very friendly, and the subtle irony in depicting provincial snobbery and prejudices connects it with the tradition of Thackeray and Dickens. The main character, the daughter of a local doctor, pure, trusting, passionate Molly Gibson, experiences a difficult stage of growing up when her heart first learns the torments of unrequited love. The novel "Wives and Daughters", the pinnacle of the literary creativity of the famous writer, is published in Russian for the first time.
