Self-rolled — this is how, in olden times, a marriage concluded autonomously, without the blessing of parents, was called. In the autumn of 1762, the guardsman Borshchev embarks on such an adventure, being in love, and reciprocally, but does not...
hope to receive the consent of his beloved's father. Due to this adventure, Borshchev faces trial, but that's not the main trouble. A month earlier, Borshchev imprudently settled in the same house with his comrades — the Guryev brothers, who turned out to be rebels wishing to overthrow Empress Catherine II. Now try proving that he is not guilty! And the punishment for rebelliousness is much harsher than for a self-rolled marriage.
The basis of the novel, written by the classic of Russian historical prose, Yevgeny Salyas, lies in a little-known episode of Catherine II's reign — the conspiracy of the guards led by the Guryev brothers and Pyotr Khrushchev. Inspired by the success of the Orlov brothers, who brought Catherine to power, the conspirators decided to carry out a new coup, but were soon arrested after Catherine's coronation.
