Vasily Vladimirovich Bikov 1924 – 2003 – a Soviet Belarusian writer and public figure, a participant in the Great Patriotic War. He participated in battles for the liberation of Ukraine and Moldova; he passed through Bulgaria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Austria... with the active army. Most of Bikov's works are stories about the Great Patriotic War, in which the moral choice of a person is shown in the most dramatic moments of life. The collection includes Bikov's stories Sotnikov 1969 and To Live Until Dawn 1972. In 1974, for the stories Obelisk and To Live Until Dawn, Bikov was awarded the State Prize of the USSR.
