"About Love" by Stendhal (1822) is the brightest treatise of the classic of French literature, which first linked expressions of love with the character of nations and the peculiarities of historical epochs. Stendhal argued that love is not just a... feeling, but a special work with one's own character. Rejecting any idealistic explanations of love, the writer connected it with the feeling of shame as a social sentiment. Stendhal's observations on the causes of love's emergence became important for novel drama throughout the 19th century. This edition of Stendhal's treatise is supplemented by a preface by Professor of RGGU Alexander Markov.
