Astarta

Jean Lorrain (1855-1906) - a name that seems somewhat familiar, although few can boast of having read the books of this author. Once he was very famous: for high-society Paris, he was the direct continuation of the work of the Goncourt brothers, and for more common readers - the embodiment of all that is evil and corrupt in modern civilization. "Astarta" - a novel from 1901 and one of the beginnings of modern literature, which no longer shows the complexity and contradictions of character but experiments with this character, examining how he might rid himself of his complexity.
