Jules Michelet (1798-1874) is a renowned French scientist, writer, and historian. His historical novel "The Witch" represents both a work of art and a kind of monograph on the role and place of women in the Middle Ages. Michelet creates... the image of a genius woman, a benevolent witch. The devil's bride, the bride of the wind has a delicate spiritual organization; she compares herself to a sad plant of the desert, lacking roots. The heroine constantly studies medicines and poisons, rediscovering nature for people, penetrating into the future, evoking the past. The philosopher G. Bataille, while criticizing this work, nevertheless acknowledges that it is "a masterpiece of Michelet in terms of poetics".
