The epic novel by the outstanding English writer of the 18th century Henry Fielding (1707—1754) is based on a classic plot of that time, intended to demonstrate that noble birth is by no means a guarantee of moral nobility, and... low origin does not mean that a person is capable only of base actions.
«The History of Tom Jones» tells the story of an orphaned young man who is raised in an aristocratic family and, despite his questionable origins, displays all the qualities of a true gentleman: selflessness, honesty, and sincerity. As is customary in such a story, it is these very qualities that help the main character to find happiness, while all those who stand in his way will face just punishment… But it is not this banal plot that made Fielding's work a classic of English literature. «The History of Tom Jones» is a realistic and at times amusing portrayal of English life and manners of that time.
