The epic novel by the outstanding English writer of the 18th century, Henry Fielding (1707–1754), is based on a classic plot of the time intended to show that noble birth is not a guarantee of moral nobility, and low origins... do not mean that a person is only capable of low actions.
«The History of Tom Jones» tells the story of an orphaned youth who is raised in an aristocratic family and, despite his dubious origins, demonstrates all the qualities of a true gentleman: selflessness, honesty, and sincerity. As is customary in such a story, it is these qualities that help the main character find happiness, while all who stood in his way will face just punishment… But it is not this banal plot that made Fielding's work a classic of English literature. «The History of Tom Jones» is a realistic and at times amusing portrayal of English life and manners of that time.
