Loni Mae lives in Washington and works as an illustrator: she draws birds at the Smithsonian Institution. Due to her mother's illness, she has to return home to the swampy lands of northern Florida — where she grew up and from where she always wanted to escape.

Loni tries to mend her complicated relationship with her mother, reconcile with her brother and his wife. While helping her mother with belongings, Loni finds a note with the words "I need to tell you something about Boyd's death." Boyd — her father — drowned 25 years ago in the swamp. His death was considered a suicide, but the reasons for his demise turn out to be much more terrifying than Loni could imagine.

Now she is drawn into a dangerous journey shrouded in the mysteries of the past. Determined to uncover the truth and avenge the wrongs done to her family, Loni must decide: join the violence or put an end to it.
