The collection includes two of Ostrovsky's most famous plays – The Storm from 1859 and The Dowryless Woman from 1878. Both plays describe the tragic fate of their heroines. Two broken lives. Two passionate hearts. Two piercing love stories. And two attempts to break free from the closed circle. In Ostrovsky's time, The Storm had the effect of a bomb blast; it is no coincidence that the critic Dobrolyubov called its heroine a ray of light in the dark kingdom. Despite the changing times, the plays remain relevant. Because hypocrisy, ostentatious virtue, selfishness, and self-love will always stand in opposition to sincere feelings and true outbursts of the soul.
