For centuries, the continent of Kiertania has been bound by eternal ice, and deadly and alluring Frost surrounds its cities. Only snitirs inhabit it – extraordinary beasts that live in two layers of reality, the World and the Soul. Parts of snitirs' bodies sustain life on the continent. Their hearts beat in place of train and car engines, while their eyes cut through the darkness in place of lanterns…
Only preparators can hunt snitirs – people endowed with special physical properties. Three preparator recruits – Sorta, Ulm, and Missé – embark on training for this esteemed service. But will each of them withstand the trials destined for them?
