Oblomov

«Oblomov» is the story of an unsuccessful career, unfulfilled love, missed opportunities, yet, strangely enough, it is also the story of a seemingly happy life, according to the main character's own opinion... This paradoxical type of personality in the form of Ilya Oblomov was depicted in the work of Goncharov, who made his hero's name a synonym for a certain way of life, defining it as «Oblomovism». So what is «Oblomovism»? Doing nothing, lying on the couch every day, apathy? How familiar that is... A person suffering from Oblomovism can essentially be intelligent, educated, and a kind-hearted individual, but all their aspirations and desires will go to waste. And yet everything could have turned out differently... Goncharov's novel «Oblomov» prompts many readers to seriously reflect and perhaps reconsider much in their lives. It is no coincidence that it is so often adapted into films and staged by leading theaters in Russia.
