Consuelo

George Sand (real name Aurora Dupin, by marriage Baroness Dudevant) — a legendary French writer whose work became one of the most significant phenomena of European literature in the 19th century. The pursuit of independence, a free lifestyle, the assertion of a woman's right to choose a lover and disregard for marital ties, the use of a male pseudonym and male clothing — all of this made the writer a precursor of 20th-century feminism. «Consuelo» — one of George Sand's best novels, written during her creative maturity and, like many of the writer's works, sparked heated debates and polar evaluations among her contemporaries. The narrative is based on the themes of the tragic clash between the artist and society, the difficult choice between career, success, and a quiet family life. The prototype for the main character of the novel was the famous Spanish-French opera singer Pauline Viardot, who was the muse of I. S. Turgenev.
