Grigory Anisimovich Fedoseev (1899–1968) wrote about the Far Eastern regions adjacent to the Sea of Okhotsk with full knowledge of the matter: he himself worked there for many years in geodetic expeditions, gradually filling in the white spots on the map of the Soviet Union. Among the dangers and trials that enrich the fate of the traveler-researcher, the characters of people manifest themselves most vividly. In the taiga or swampy tundra, one cannot work or live with half measures—the harsh nature does not forgive mistakes and weaknesses. One of the most charming characters of Fedoseev became Ulukitkan (“squirrel” in translation from Evenki) — Semyon Grigoryevich Trifonov. The old man often accompanied geodesists as a guide, teaching them to understand and feel nature, for “the mother gives life, the years bring wisdom.” The writer generously shares this age-old, hard-earned wisdom of the northerners on the pages of his books. The book includes the most famous works of the writer: “The Path of Trials,” “Death Will Wait for Me,” “The Evil Spirit of Yambui,” and “The Last Bonfire.”
