In the early morning at the Brooklyn Shopping Center — a cultural hub for many residents of the small town of Voskresensk-33 — Kostya meets his former classmate Zhenya. Zhenya, who was teased and despised by everyone in school, is... now well-dressed, looks expensive, and turns out to have headed the factory from which Kostya was just fired.
How did he manage that? It's simple, he sold his soul to the devil.
At first, Kostya refuses to believe it, but the meeting with Zhenya reveals cracks in the reality that Kostya had previously refused to notice. Could the devil choose a small town beyond the Urals, which isn't even on the map, as a place of earthly residence instead of Moscow or St. Petersburg? And why, by the way, isn't it on the map? And how is this connected with the fact that time in Voskresensk-33 seems to have frozen in an endless October, and Kostya suddenly starts seeing dead people?..
