An ordinary clerk from Baltimore, USA, always dreamed of sea travels. After purchasing a small yacht with a friend and securing support from a local museum, Gilbert Clingel organized a scientific expedition to study the deserted islands of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Yucatán. However, the friends never reached their destination. Their boat crashed against the reefs of the Bahamas. After getting to shore, the amateur naturalists decided not to cancel the expedition, but simply to change their object of study. Living in a half-ruined hut, they explore the island, scraping their feet on the rocks, climbing into caves with bats, and swimming around the reef in the company of sharks. Despite all the challenges of the journey, a few years later, Clingel returned to the island to continue his research. The diaries of the two expeditions form the basis of this book.
