Joseph Conrad (1857–1924) was an English novelist, the son of Polish nobleman and poet Apollo Korzeniowski. Dreaming of the sea since childhood, seventeen-year-old Conrad left his uncle's home in Odessa, where he lived after the death of his parents, first... to Marseille and then to England. Having signed on as a sailor on an English merchant ship, he traveled to all continents, attained the rank of captain, and became a British subject. His rich experience as a sailor allowed Conrad to become an unmatched master of the sea novel, from whom J. London, E. Hemingway, W. Faulkner, and G. Greene learned. This collection includes the novellas “Heart of Darkness,” “Typhoon,” and “Freya of the Seven Islands.”
