«To the Lighthouse»
«To the Lighthouse» is the first book of the seven-volume cycle «In Search of Lost Time» written by the famous Marcel Proust.
The book tells the story of a mature aristocrat, Swann. Experiencing a mid-life crisis, he immerses himself in memories of his childhood, youth, and first love.
«To the Lighthouse» is not only a poignant exploration of the human inner world but also an elegant portrait of French society at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
«Mrs. Dalloway. To the Lighthouse»
«Mrs. Dalloway» - Clarissa Dalloway, a socially prominent woman in her early fifties, prepares for a reception she is hosting at her home. In the morning, she leaves the house to buy flowers, which she loves very much, and she must decorate her home with them by evening. While walking through London, she reminisces about her youth and first love. In another part of London, Septimus Warren Smith, a World War I veteran suffering from shell shock, is going with his wife Lucrezia to see a psychiatrist. Smith’s day intertwines with Clarissa's day and her friends', their lives converge when the party reaches its climax. Upon learning about the tragedy involving Smith, Clarissa reevaluates her life and her attitude toward death.
«To the Lighthouse» is an extraordinarily unusual book. Two days separated by a decade. Depicted ideas, moods, and spiritual experiences. Memory, through which a great life gradually and imperceptibly enters this delicate and elegant novel. This is Virginia Woolf's most famous work.
On its pages, the large Ramsey family, spending the summer on the Isle of Skye, dreams of going to the lighthouse that is visible from their shore. Daily, Mrs. Ramsey informs that her husband will take them there the next day. However, the trip keeps getting postponed.
By narrating this story, Woolf managed to paint a whimsical and dimensional picture of human relationships and tell how men and women think and feel while no one is listening.
