From the pen of Jane Austen emerged the most romantic pairs and the wittiest heroines of fiction. With remarkable observation, great skill, and subtle English humor, Jane Austen describes the life and manners of the provincial society of her time. "Northanger Abbey" is her most mischievous book, a witty irony on the canons of the love novel. Catherine's parents are not very rich, but by no means poor. She is not especially beautiful, but not unattractive either. Catherine is naive, but only due to a lack of life experience. She adores Gothic novels, and her whole life, as she thinks, is filled with dark mysteries and enigmas. It is only through love that the heroine gains a new perspective on reality, revealing previously unknown facets of life. The edition of the novel is released in a magnificent classical translation by Emmanuel Samoilovich Marshak, which is considered canonical.
