The eccentric German professor of mineralogy Otto Lidenbrock discovers runic inscriptions in an ancient book and, with the help of his nephew Axel, attempts to decipher the hidden secret behind them. To the young man's horror, the text states the possibility of reaching the center of the Earth through the crater of a volcano in Iceland. Driven by a thirst for new discoveries, the professor, without wasting time, sets off on the journey, bringing along his desperately resisting nephew. Underground, the heroes are met by an incredible prehistoric world – here hot rivers flow and the ocean rages, a giant mushroom forest grows, and mastodons graze.
