The hedgehog, awakened from winter hibernation, is frightened by the rustling of leaves and freezes under a thick layer of foliage. The mother grouse tries to distract and lead the hunting dog away from her chicks - and the dog falls for her trick. Like a cup, the cap of an old mushroom fills with dew - and birds flock to the life-giving moisture, not even a human hesitates to partake... Mikhail Prishvin always saw nature as if through a magnifying glass - and it revealed its hidden secrets to him. In Russian literature, there has been, according to Maxim Gorky, "no such lover of nature, such an insightful connoisseur of nature, and such a pure poet." And in the artist Evgeny Rachev, Prishvin found not just an equal expert, but also a like-minded person - capable of perceiving and conveying to the reader the unhurried and harmonious life of the Russian forest.
