Zoroastrianism has been studied relatively recently. The writings of this religion, which defined the shape of monotheism for millennia to come, nevertheless differ so greatly from the familiar worldview of the Western person that they often raise many questions. This bewilderment is also characteristic of ancient historians who observed the phenomenon of such an astonishing religion in close proximity to the familiar oikoumene. Albert de Jong, in his fundamental study of Zoroastrianism, first focuses on the living testimonies of Greek and Roman historians in order to find in them valuable information about the nature of this eternal teaching. The main goal of his work is to determine the extent to which classical sources confirm or refute traditional views of ancient Zoroastrianism.
