Father Frost

The book tells about the busy pre-New Year days of Father Frost, who prepares the Christmas tree and gifts. He is assisted by Aunt Winter, the Snow Maiden, the funny boy Egor-Naperekor, and the little New Year.
The story is almost detective-like: there are sleds-scooters, and a complicated search for the beautiful Christmas tree, a chase, and the villain Nightingale the Robber, who schemes but receives deserved punishment, and the magical transformation of Father Frost into Prince Ivan (and back) with the help of vats with young and old water, and a fun celebration in the palace.
The tale concludes with an exceptionally humane act by Father Frost, who, as it turns out, was concerned about forest preservation back in 1958. He returns the Christmas tree to its old place, freezes it to a stump, and the tree continues to grow as if nothing happened, occasionally remembering the holiday and its magnificent New Year attire.
